You must tell us if you change your business type. This is also known as a 'change in legal entity'. For example, moving from an individual provider to a partnership or limited company.
This is to make sure that there is the continued delivery of regulated activities at a location when a business transfers between two different legal entities.
To tell us about a change in business type, you must:
- update your registration using the provider portal
- complete an additional information form for the sector your business operates in
How to tell us about a change of business type
To update your registration in the provider portal:
- log in to the provider portal
- start the register as a provider form
- tell us you want to change your business type, when prompted – we will ask for your current provider id
- on the provider registration screen, select Change next to the current business type
You will need to complete the provider application again. This includes supplying the relevant supporting documents.
You will also need to send us a completed insurance form and an additional information form for the sector you work in.

During a change in business type, registered managers at the location can either apply to:
- continue their registration under the incoming provider
- cancel their manager registration
- remove the location from their registration.
What applications are considered a change of business type
When we receive a change of business type request, we check:
- the location remains the same and that there is a continuing regulatory history
- there is a process to ensure the smooth delivery of the service between two legal entities
- no one is providing care while unregistered
