Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 31 December 2024 to 17 February 2025. The service is registered to provide personal care to younger adults living with learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorder. At the time of our assessment there were 6 people using the service.
We assessed the service to review breaches of regulation we found at our last assessment in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance. At this assessment, improvements had been made, and the provider was no longer in breach of regulations. Governance systems were effective. Medicines management and cleanliness had been improved and risk to people posed by the environment had been mitigated.
We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. The provider was fully aware of ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ and made sure the service people received fulfilled all aspects of this and other good practice guidance.
People received care centred on them and their individual needs, including those related to their protected equality characteristics. People’s care was regularly reviewed. People were protected from abuse and risks to people were managed well. Staff helped people to keep their homes clean. Staff were recruited safely and there were enough staff to meet people’s needs. Staff were valued and supported with their learning and development. Staff were encouraged to raise concerns, and these were listened to. Care was person-centred and promoted people's dignity, privacy and human rights. Education and learning were promoted. Risk assessments were in place and detailed. Staff told us the registered manager was approachable and good at listening.
People's experience of this service
We spoke to 4 people who used the service about their experiences of care and support. Two people used words to communicate, 1 person used Makaton and 1 person used vocalisation and natural gestures. We also spoke to 4 relatives about their loved one’s experiences of the service.
People told us they felt safe living at The Paddocks. One person said, “Yes, I feel safe living here, I like it here. I feel safe with the staff, they look after me.” Another person used Makaton and nodded to indicate that they were happy and felt safe in the service.
Relatives told us their loved ones were safe. One relative said, “I am confident that [person] is safe here.” Another relative told us, “One hundred percent. [The staff] are open and honest. Incidents are brought to my attention, and I am informed, however trivial.”
Feedback about the management team was positive and families were listened to. Relatives were appreciative of the service. Their comments included, “[Person] is very happy to be here and it is their home. [Staff] can do more activities with [person] than I can” and, “Nothing could be better. I'm very happy [person] lives here.”
