Date of assessment: 14 and 16 August 2024. Springfield Lodge is a residential care home providing accommodation and residential care for up to 15 people in one adapted building, with bedrooms over 2 floors. At the time of the inspection there were 15 people living at the service. This service has been in Special Measures since 20 December 2022. The provider demonstrated improvements that have been made. The service is no longer rated as inadequate overall or in any of the key questions. Therefore, this service is no longer in Special Measures. We assessed all the quality statements from the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led key questions and found areas of good practice. The scores for these areas have been combined with scores based on the key question ratings from the last inspection. The assessment of these 5 key questions indicated areas of improvement since the last inspection, our overall rating has changed to good. The service had made significant improvements. However, the provider needed to take, and took, immediate action to ensure robust procedures for the management and storage of prescribed creams were followed. The provider did not have a manager registered with us. This was required to ensure the manager is of good character and had the necessary qualifications, competence and skills to lead the service and manage the regulated activity of personal care. The provider told us they were reviewing people’s roles and responsibilities.

People's experience of the service

Updated 6 June 2024

People living in the home told us they were happy with the care they received. Relatives told us their loved ones were very safe living at Springfield Lodge. One person said, “I am very happy. If I didn’t like it here, I wouldn’t be here.” People spoke positively about both staff and management. Comments included, “They are very easy to talk to, very friendly.” And, “You can do what you want, the staff are out of this world.” Observations of interactions between people who could not provide verbal feedback and staff showed people were happy and relaxed in the company of staff. People could choose where to eat their meals, either in the dining room, lounge or their bedrooms. Feedback on the food and drinks was positive. Comments included, “They are very good but there is always too much for me. We have a choice of two things at lunch and teatime is usually sandwiches and sometimes soup. We always have a sweet. If you don’t want what they have they will always ask what you do want. There is always plenty of cold drinks. I asked for apple juice, and they get it specially for me.” And, “The meals are spot on. They ask if there is anything you want. I like curry, you can have a drink when you want and ice cream and lollipops. You can sit where you want.”
