Our view of the service

Genuine Carers – Kirklees is a domiciliary care agency which provides personal care to people in their own homes. At the time of our inspection, 13 people were receiving a service. This assessment commenced on 22 August 2024 and was completed on 17 October 2024. The assessment included 1 visit to the service on 22 August 2024. At the last inspection the provider was rated inadequate, at this inspection the provider had improved and the overall rating is now good. People were supported to receive care from a service which ensured they were kept safe. Some staff were unsure how to report safeguarding concerns externally, which the registered manager addressed. People’s needs were assessed, managed and risks mitigated, including in the environment, to make sure people were safe. There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff, who received effective support, supervision and development. People’s care and treatment was assessed and reviewed. Equality characteristics were considered as part of a person-centred approach. Consent and details around mental capacity were appropriately recorded. People were treated with kindness, empathy and compassion. Care plans contained sufficient information, although there was some repetition. Improvements had been made in respect of the provider’s oversight of the service. Quality checks were being completed by each member of the management team. Whilst some improvements were still needed to ensure these systems were robustly used. The provider used a service improvement plan to record actions needed to continuously improve the service. This service has been in Special Measures since 25 August 2023. The provider demonstrated improvements that have been made. The service is no longer rated as inadequate overall or in any of the key questions. Therefore, the service is no longer in Special Measures.

People's experience of this service

People felt safe receiving this service. Some people said staff did not always stay for the full duration of their call, which the registered manager followed up. Medication was mostly well managed and where improvements were needed, the registered manager took action to address this. Some people told us staff spoke in front of them in a language they couldn’t understand, which made them feel excluded from their care. The registered manager said they would discuss this with staff to reiterate the importance of including people. People were not aware they could access their care records in paper format. We received mixed feedback about people’s involvement in their care planning, although others confirmed they were part of ongoing reviews. People were encouraged to give their feedback about the quality of care they received. The provider could demonstrate action was taken in response. People and relatives said they were consistently asked for their consent before care was given. People and relatives said they were supported and cared for by a consistent group of staff who knew their needs and abilities.
