Our view of the service
Charnley House is a residential care home providing personal care and accommodation to up to 40 people and is located in Hyde, Tameside. At the time of our inspection there were 36 people using the service.
We carried out this assessment in November and December 2024. We visited the home on 7, 11 and 19 of November 2024. The assessment was carried out by 3 adult social care inspectors, a medicines inspector and an expert by experience. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service.
During the inspection we spoken with the registered manager, deputy manager, area manager and the provider. We spoke with 10 people who lived at the home, 4 relatives and 5 care staff. We also reviewed 15 care plans and 3 staff recruitment files.
Accurate and contemporaneous records were not always maintained in a number of areas. This included re-positioning charts and the documentation of people’s food and fluid intake. Where people required their drinks to be thickened due to being at risk of choking, inconsistent records were maintained by staff. Care plans were not always updated when people’s care needs changed following advice from the SaLT (Speech and Language Therapy) service.
Some risks weren’t effectively managed. Items such as aerosols, shower gels and creams were not always stored safely. One person had been observed trying to eat these items which could place them at risk of harm. People weren’t always provided with pressure relieving cushions to ensure they maintained good skin integrity. Audits and governance checks hadn’t fully identified and addressed these concerns at the time of the assessment.
We observed several interactions between staff and people living at the home which didn’t always preserve people’s dignity. People living at the home and their families spoke positively about the care provided at the home. People looked clean and well presented.
