Our current view of the service

Good

Updated 9 April 2024

Cherrydale is a residential care home providing accommodation for up to 22 older people who require nursing or personal care, including people living with dementia. At the time of our assessment, 21 people were living at the home. Our assessment started on 4 June 2024 and ended on 21 June 2024. We carried out an unannounced visit to the home on 4 June 2024. We carried out the assessment to follow up information of concern we had received from the local authority and professionals relating to staffing levels, cleanliness, and the care of people who were at risk of pressure damage. We also followed up on areas for improvement identified at the last inspection (published 19 January 2023) when we rated the service requires improvement. Following this assessment, the rating has changed to good. For more details about our findings, please see our key question summaries.

People's experience of the service

Updated 9 April 2024

We carried out a site visit on 4 June 2024 where we spoke with 9 people who lived at the home and 6 staff, including the registered manager. We observed how people were being cared for and supported. Our observations included the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us.

We reviewed records, including 4 people’s care plans and risk assessments, staff recruitment and training records, quality checks and audits. We checked standards of infection prevention and control (IPC) and the arrangements for managing medicines.

Before the assessment, we received feedback about the home from the local authority and 3 healthcare professionals.

The assessment was carried out by one inspector, one assessor, and an Expert by Experience. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service.

People felt safe at the home and when staff provided their care. Staff were available and responsive when people needed them. People lived in an environment that was safe, clean and adequately maintained.

People had been well supported when they moved into the home and to access healthcare services if they needed them. However, staff had not always contacted professionals promptly enough in the past when people’s health deteriorated, or followed guidance professionals put in place. The provider and registered manager understood the need to address these concerns and had put plans in place to improve.
