Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 08 to 15 January 2025 This was a responsive assessment based on concerns raised by the local authority with regards to delayed reporting of incidents. Charlton Grange Care home is a nursing and residential care home providing support to older people, and people living with dementia, some of whom had nursing needs as well as physical disabilities or mental health needs. We found the provider reported incidents in a timely manner to the local authority and CQC. There was a culture of openness where managers investigated incidents thoroughly and identified lessons that could be learned from accidents or incidents. Staff understood and managed people’s risks. People were protected and kept safe and were confident they could raise concerns. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. Staff were recruited safely and had effective training, support and supervision in order to ensure the delivery of good quality care. Staff managed medicines well and involved people and family members in planning any changes. The general facilities and equipment were clean and well maintained, however, some aspects of the upstairs environment required attention to ensure people had a good dining experience. We received evidence from the provider following our on-site assessment, which evidenced these shortfalls were addressed. There was a culture of improvement and inclusivity which had led to people experiencing positive outcomes and enhanced their quality of life.

People's experience of this service

We received positive feedback from people and their family members during the assessment. We saw positive interactions between staff and people and it was clear staff understood people’s care and social needs. They adapted their approach and support in line with people’s individual preferences. Family members felt people were well cared for. Where concerns were raised, they felt listened to, that actions were taken and improvements made. People said they received good quality care from knowledgeable staff who treated them as individuals. They spoke very positively of the staff, managers and their experience of living at the home. They said they were supported by staff who were caring, friendly and who understood their needs well. They felt safe and were involved in planning their care and understood their rights. We observed staff encouraging people to be as independent as possible in a variety of tasks. Several people described how staff treated them kindly and made sure any personal care was done sensitively, preserving their privacy and dignity. We were told, “This is a wonderful home. I feel safe and secure and the staff make us all feel comfortable.” People told us they enjoyed the activities provided, saying, “I’ve got no complaints, I do exercises three times a week, see films, I go down to the main lounge most weekends, listen to music, they do a lot here, the activity people are good.” A family member told us, “[Person] always lived alone but now they have company and activities, they are happy there, they do a good job here.” People felt able to complain and were confident action would be taken and improvements made. People knew staff and leaders well and told us, “It has got a good atmosphere engendered by the staff; I would recommend it and give staff 10 out of 10,” and “[interim manager] knows all the residents personally, integrates with the residents and listens to us.”
