During an inspection looking at part of the service

Some people were not able to tell us directly what they though about the service. We decided to undertake a Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI) exercise. SOFI is designed to be used when inspecting services for people who had some difficulty in communicating their opinions on the services they receive.

We spoke to two people, one person told us 'The staff are very nice', 'If I want something they will get it for me' and 'I wouldn't like to be anywhere else'. The other said 'The girls are lovely and the food is nice'.

We found that care plans contained the correct information and were reviewed on a regular basis with input from relatives where appropriate.

During our visit all interactions we observed between the staff and the people living at the home were respectful and courteous.

During a routine inspection

Many of the people who lived here were not able to give us their views because of their dementia needs. We used a number of different methods to help us understand their experiences.

People and their relatives felt the staff were respectful and helped people to retain their dignity. One visitor told us, 'The staff are always polite. They make sure he's always clean.' They felt people at this home were 'well looked after.'

One relative told us that they were very involved in their 'xx's care plan and they regularly sat down with staff to discuss it. Staff would ring them to keep them regularly updated about their progress. They did feel that there were not enough staff around, for example to take people to the toilet and that the staff could have more support from management. Another relative told us they felt that there was a limited choice of food at lunchtime, only soup and sandwiches.

The people living at the home told us they were happy with the service provided by staff. One person said 'Very kind, nice girls (the staff), if they can help they will'. Another person told us that they were 'delighted' with the service they received; staff listen to them and know their needs. The food was 'ok' and the staff were always training.

People told us, 'There's always plenty of activities and there's posters telling people what's on. There's a secure garden so people have the chance to go out if they want.' We were also told that there were enough activities and things to do and they sometimes went out for lunch.
