Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At the last inspection we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people’s outcomes were consistently good, and people’s feedback confirmed this.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Staff always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. A relative said, “Staff are always popping in and making sure [person’s name] is ok and doesn’t need anything.” Another relative said, “Staff are very kind, and they always have time to talk to the family and relate to us. There are lots of girls from the town, and we are local so have a connection.”

Treating people as individuals

Staff treated people as individuals and made sure the care, support and treatment offered met their needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. The staff team actively promoted an approach where people were truly respected and valued as individuals and empowered to be partners in their care. One person said, “They never rush you and are all very kind and helpful.”

Independence, choice and control

Staff promoted people’s independence. They made sure people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People confirmed any changes to the ways staff supported were discussed with them and agreed. A person said, “We talk about the care plans and are asked what we think.” Activities provided at the home were very varied, including 1-1 sessions and routine access into the community and to social events. A person said, “They put on some good shows. There’s enough going on for me, the music people are very good.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Staff listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. Staff were very knowledgeable about each person using the service and could describe their needs, including how any of their cultural needs were met. A staff member said, “If there are any changes to people’s needs, we raise this immediately with the nurses and they always make sure the person is alright.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff confirmed that the management team supported their wellbeing to make sure they could give their best to people when at work. Staff described how their work was routinely praised and recognised within the home.
