10 March 2025

Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last inspection we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

This service scored 65 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 2

Most people spoke positively about the care they received and told us they were supported by staff who knew them well. A person told us, “I love a bath and [staff member] takes me and bathes me whenever I want one. They put music on for me which I love, and I get my hair and nails done by staff which I like to get done.” However, we received feedback from people who felt they did not always have their privacy and dignity maintained. One person told us, “Personal care is not great at times and when undressing [staff] can leave the door open.” We shared this feedback with the manager who told us they would raise directly with the staff team and increase their observations of staff to address any poor practice. Varied feedback was also received from family members. Positive comments included, “I am confident in the staff. They will go out of their way to compliment [Name] and laugh and joke with her” and “Staff are getting to know [Name’s] personal choices. Staff are all lovely. We are really pleased with the move.” One family member described recent shortfalls in care at times when the management team where not on site. The told us they had raised their concerns with the manager, who responded by increasing their visibility over the weekend. They told us standards had now improved and felt their concerns had now been addressed.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

We did not look at Treating people as individuals during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Caring.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff encouraged people to do as much as they could for themselves. Care plans clearly described where people were to retain their independence. Leisure activities were available for people. This reduced the risk of social isolation. Some people received care in bed. This did not create a barrier to participating in activities which were important to people. A staff member told us, “There are 2 residents who stay in bed. One who likes music and one who likes listening to audio books. I have ordered a bed keyboard and a kindle, and I also use sensory mats for activities in bed.” Some care plans needed to be more detailed to assist staff supporting people on a 1-1 basis. We raised this with the management team who had also identified this and were working to make the necessary improvements through a review of care plans.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. We observed warm and friendly interactions between people. Staff spoke to people in a respectful manner and were attentive to peoples requests for care. Family members told us how staff recognised changes in people and took action to address immediate needs. This included purchasing specific food for a person who had lost interest in eating regular meals. This had helped the person to avoid weight loss and prevented a further deterioration to their physical health.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 2

We did not look at Workforce wellbeing and enablement during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Caring.
