During an inspection looking at part of the service

The inspection took place because we were following up concerns raised at the visit in October 2011. Since then the providers have decided to temporarily close the home to complete a major refurbishment programme and recruit a new staff team. Therefore, over the last two months people have been moving to alternative accommodation and the last two people are due to move out before the end of December 2011. Throughout the process of closing the home, we have kept in touch with the manager and local authority. People and their relatives have been fully involved in this process and the manager ensured staff practices were improved, so an acceptable standard of care was in place.

During an inspection in response to concerns

Recently some relatives and people who use the service have raised concerns with the owner that care practices were not always appropriate. The owner has brought this to the attention of the CQC and local authority. All of the people concerned have been able to fully discuss their worries. The owners felt these concerns showed there were significant difficulties in the home and to improve staff practices brought in a new manager and asked experienced staff to work at the home. They have also provided further training for staff.

During our inspection visit we spoke with one of the people who used the service. They told us that it was "alright living here" and said they felt safe. We also spoke to two relatives. One relative said they felt it was a nice home, but it "needed a bit of TLC". Another relative said they were sometimes concerned about the safety of their relative due to the lack of visible staff.
