Good

Updated 4 December 2024

Date of assessment: 11 December 2024 to 13 January 2025. We carried out an assessment based on information of concern we received. The service specialised in the care of people with a learning disability and autistic people. We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether they guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. People were protected and kept safe. Staff understood and managed risks. Where risks were identified they were mitigated. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. People’s medicines were managed safely. People were involved in assessments and reviews of their needs. Care plans and assessments took account of people’s communication, personal care and health needs. People were involved in decisions about their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent. The service provided information in a format people could understand. Staff worked in partnership with other agencies to make sure people were encouraged to identify and achieve their goals. People were treated with kindness and compassion. Staff protected their privacy and dignity. People were encouraged to maintain relationships with relatives and friends. People received fair and equal care and treatment. Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Leaders were knowledgeable, supportive and visible. Staff understood their roles and felt able to give feedback. There was a culture of continuous learning and improvement to ensure people received good quality care.

People told us they felt safe and well supported. They said staff were “respectful and caring” and they felt they were treated as individuals. People told us they felt listened to and felt comfortable with planning their care with staff. People confirmed they liked their staff, and they felt involved in the running of their home, including deciding on activities or events. Relatives told us, where people were unable to verbally communicate their needs, they were included by using other communication methods. They said staff consistently interacted positively with people, they tried to draw out information when something wasn’t quite right and the service shared information as required. Feedback confirmed staff proactively supported people to be as independent as possible, in order to meet their aims and ambitions. A person shared how staff encouraged and supported them with many household activities but acknowledged, “There’s some things, like cooking, I’m just not good at!” Relatives shared examples of how staff took time and effort supporting people to achieve specific aims, such as crossing the road safely or using public transport. People and their relatives told us they had confidence the management team responded appropriately to accidents, incidents or safeguarding matters and kept them fully informed. One shared, “Communication with us has improved greatly and we feel much happier there appears to be emphasis on teamwork”.
