Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 30 December 2024 to 8 January 2025. Chase House is a residential care home with nursing provision. The service supports older people, those living with dementia, physical disabilities, nursing needs and mental health support needs. The service can support up to 50 people. At the time we started our assessment, there were 49 people living at the service. We identified 5 breaches of the legal regulations concerning safeguarding, safe care and treatment, person-centred care, consent and governance. Safeguarding concerns had not always been identified or reported. Risks to people's health and safety were not always well assessed and managed. Accident and incidents had not always been well managed to inform learning and reduce risks. Medicines were not always managed safely. The environment and infection control practices were not always safe. Care was not always person-centred and staff were not always responsive to people’s immediate needs. Improvement was needed to staff recruitment practices. However, staff felt able to raise concerns with leaders. When the service had identified changes to people’s health and care needs, they worked with external health professionals and sought medical advice appropriately. In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/ or appeals have been concluded. This service has been placed into special measures. The purpose of special measures is to ensure that services providing inadequate care make significant improvements. Special measures provide a framework within which we use our enforcement powers in response to inadequate care and provide a timeframe within which providers must improve the quality of the care they provide.

People's experience of this service

We received positive and negative feedback from people and their relatives about their experiences. Comments ranged from; “The call bell often falls off the bed, and I can’t reach it. They do 2 to 3-hour checks at night, but they never come in. The other night, I lost the buzzer. I was trying to tell them, but they weren’t listening and just went away.” to more positive comments like, “I think they are amazing; they ring me up about everything, they are spot on with safeguarding and when things haven’t gone quite right, they follow all the procedures. I can’t find a single thing wrong with them.” Our findings around how staff interacted with people showed significant shortfalls. While we did observe positive interactions between staff and people, staff did not always promptly respond to people when they were in need. We carried out structured observations where people could not tell us about their experience and found people did not always receive regular interaction from staff or that interactions were task-led. While some people had been supported to participate in activities, records showed other people received very little support to participate in meaningful activities. Overall, our assessment found several elements of care did not meet the expected standards.
