Updated 18 November 2024

Date of Assessment: 27 November to 30 December 2024. The service is a residential care home registered to support up to 27 older people, including those living with dementia. The assessment included 3 site visits with additional evidence reviewed remotely. This was the first assessment since the provider registered with the Care Quality Commission on 27 February 2023. At this assessment we found the provider was in breach of 5 legal regulations. These related to person centred care, safe care and treatment; specifically, medicines management, meeting nutritional and hydration needs, good governance and staffing. People’s care or their care records were not always person centred and there was a lack of activities provided. Medicines were not always managed safely. We identified issues with stock control, administration practices and record keeping. Guidance and record keeping relating to food and fluid intake was not sufficiently detailed or robust. We identified issues with contemporaneous record keeping and audit and governance processes. Audits which had been completed had not the identified issues or concerns we found. There was limited evidence to show effective learning from incidents, accidents and complaints had occurred. Staff supervision had not been provided in line with the provider’s policy and we were not assured staff training records were wholly accurate. Staff worked with all agencies involved in people’s care for the best outcomes and smooth transitions when moving services. They monitored people’s health to support healthy living. People were treated with kindness and compassion. The service was easy to access and worked to eliminate discrimination. Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally, free from bullying or harassment. People with protected characteristics felt supported. Staff understood their roles and responsibilities. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of the service

Updated 18 November 2024

Overall, people told us they were safe living at the home, though some felt more staff were needed to ensure needs were met timely and communal areas were covered at all times. People’s showering or bathing preferences had not been sought, with most only having 1 per week. However, people looked clean and presentable and said they were able to make choices about what to wear each day. People told us there was little in the way of activities, with them largely having to amuse themselves or buy their own things to do. The home did have an activity schedule but we did not see evidence this had been followed. People felt staff had received sufficient training to support them safely. They told us staff sought their consent before providing care and overall, treated them with kindness and respect. Resident meetings had recently been introduced, which was welcomed as people stated they would welcome the opportunity to provide feedback on the home and care provided. Not all people spoken with were aware of the recent changes to management, though said this was not a concern as they were more than happy to speak to one of the care staff if they had any issues.
