Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. This is the first assessment for this newly registered service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. People and their relatives told us staff were kind and caring. People told us they were assured information shared about their care and personal details was kept confidential. People told us they were treated with dignity and their individuality respected. Staff had received training in treating people and each other with dignity and respect. Feedback received was positive about staff kindness. Some comments were, “I'm lucky really they are so good”, “They're all very good and they're all very pleasant”, “They're kind and I'm quite happy”, “I couldn't live at home without the carers.”

Treating people as individuals

The service treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People told us they were treated as individuals. Staff knew people well. One person said, “There is nobody here that I wouldn't welcome into my house, the care is very good.” Records showed the service had learned about people’s lives, including their younger days and work life. Care and support plans were person focused and their wishes were at the centre of their support.

Independence, choice and control

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. The promotion of independence was at the very core of the service, supporting people to remain well in their own surroundings was a focus. Staff were committed to supporting people and told us various ways in which they achieved it. Records showed people were at the heart of their own care.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The service listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff respond to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. People and their relatives told us communication was effective at the service. Records showed staff continually supporting individual needs and made links with other services for people.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The service cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff told us they were supported with a range of benefits and support. Wellbeing was a focus for the provider and the manager. Staff told us there were several recognition schemes which gave them the opportunity to receive awards. The manager was committed to staff recognition and felt it was important. Overwhelmingly staff told us they were supported, one member of staff said, “I do feel part of the team. I would also like to say that everyone who works in the office has been so supportive and helpful to me. I am never afraid to go into the office to ask any one of them a question.”
