Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 10 March to 13 March 2025. HF Trust – Gaston House is a residential care home providing accommodation for persons who require personal care and have a diagnosis of a learning disability and/or autism. There were 5 people living at the home at the time of our assessment. We expect health and social care providers to guarantee people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices and independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ is the guidance CQC follows to make assessments and judgements. This assessment was carried out to follow up on action we told the provider to take at the last assessment. During this assessment we spoke with people who lived at the service, their relatives, staff, the registered manager and sought feedback from other healthcare professionals. We looked at care plans, recruitment files and quality assurance records. We found improvements had been made and the provider was no longer in breach of the regulations. There was a new management team in place who were focussed on promoting the provider’s visions and values and ensuring people received person-centred care which met their individual preferences and routines. Risks to people's safety and wellbeing were assessed and managed and where a need was identified, they were referred to other specialist healthcare professionals for advice and support. Staffing levels were based on people’s identified needs and where people required 1 to 1 support to pursue individual interests or activities, the registered manager ensured this was in place. The registered manager was aware of the barriers people with disabilities could face and was confident to challenge healthcare inequalities. They advocated on behalf of people and ensured reasonable adjustments were implemented when required.

People's experience of this service

During our assessment we observed supportive and kindly interactions between people and the staff supporting them. Staff were aware of people and recognised when they were becoming anxious or distressed. Staff understood what could increase people’s anxiety and responded promptly to provide reassurance. People were supported by staff to learn and maintain everyday life skills to promote and maintain their independence and given opportunities for meaningful engagement both inside and outside the home. People were supported to attend regular checks and receive ongoing care from healthcare professionals to help them stay well. Relatives were positive about the standards of care and were confident their family members were safe and well looked after.
