Caring

Requires improvement

31 March 2025

Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last inspection we rated this key question requires improvement. At this inspection the rating has remained requires improvement. This meant people were not always well-supported, cared for or treated with dignity and respect.

This service scored 50 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 2

The service did not always support people with their privacy and dignity. During our visit, we saw 2 incidents where people were not treated respectfully. A staff member spoke loudly in a shared area about a person’s toileting needs. This meant others could hear about the person’s private toileting needs. On another occasion, we saw a staff member had left the bathroom door open while supporting the person on the toilet. This meant other people could see the person on the toilet when they walked past. These observations showed people were not always treated with privacy and dignity. Other than these 2 incidents, we saw staff were kind to people when they spoke to them. People at the service told us that staff were kind and compassionate.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 2

People were not always treated as individuals. People’s culture and backgrounds were recorded in care planning documents. However, people told us that they had not always been involved in reviewing their care plans. This meant we were not assured that people’s preferences were clearly recorded, so staff could treat people as individuals.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

We reviewed activities that people were offered. We saw that activities were mostly offered inside the care home, and occasional external activities were also available. However, staff told us people did not always get offered opportunities to leave the care home as there was not enough staff to support this activity. People told us that they enjoyed the activities available within the home and we saw people engaging happily in an activity of Bingo. People told us that they had freedom and independence to complete their own routines during the day. Staff explained that they encouraged people to be as independent as possible.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 2

Staff told us that low staffing levels sometimes impacted their ability to respond quickly. A staff member said, “Some residents have to wait.” We observed one incident where a person had to wait for support. However, other than this one observation, we saw people were responded to in a timely way and staff checked on people as they went past. One person said, ‘The carers are always checking on us as they wander around the lounge.’ We therefore found that staff’s responsiveness to people’s needs could vary.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 2

Staff told us that they did not always have good wellbeing. Staff did not always feel leaders effectively listened to their concerns and acted on them in a timely way. Some staff reported feeling unappreciated and not valued. Whilst most the staff reported this, we did receive a few comments that some of the management team were supportive.
