Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 11 December 2024 to 02 January 2025. Fernleigh Court Care and Nursing Home is a residential and nursing care service supporting people who may be living with dementia, a physical disability, a mental health need or a sensory impairment. At our last assessment under the previous provider the service was rated as good in all key questions (report published 04 June 2021). At this assessment we found the service was in breach of two regulations of the Health and Social Care Act (2014) in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance. The service requires improvement in all key questions. We have asked the provider to make improvements and send us an action plan to show us how they will make and sustain improvements. We will meet with the provider to discuss the findings of this assessment and how they will make and sustain these improvements.
People's experience of this service
People had not always had good experiences at the service. On some occasions people had not been supported to have their personal care completed to an acceptable level and this included areas such as oral care. Staff had not always raised concerns about people’s safety in a timely manner and this had resulted in less good outcomes for people. People were not consistently supported in line with their preferences, likes and dislikes. External professionals found examples of people having less good care. Following this the senior management team reacted and started implementing immediate improvements. These had a positive effect on people’s experiences and people were no longer unsafe living at the service. Relatives gave us some mixed feedback about staffing levels at some times of day and how well the service communicated with them. However, they also told us they were happy about the care and support their loved ones received. People were relaxed being supported by staff and told us they were happy with their support. They told us staff were kind and caring. One person said, ‘‘It am extremely comfortable here. The staff are kind and do everything I need them to do and then some. What more could you ask for?’’
