Date of Assessment: 10 December to 20 December 2024. This assessment was in response to concerns raised with CQC. Ferndale Care home is a ‘care home’ which provides accommodation and personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement. The home supports up to 58 people. At the time of the assessment 51 people were living in the home. The home is a residential service supporting older people living with dementia and nursing needs. The provider has recently bought the service and are in the process of making changes to improve the care and support people receive. Due to the provider only recently taking over the service, the implementation of new care plans onto the electronic system had not fully taken place. This meant some peoples care plans and risk assessments had not been updated and did not reflect people’s needs. The service was addressing this, we were assured all plans would be updated. Staff, relatives and people who lived at the service told us there was not enough staff to meet people’s needs. There were some shortfalls in staff training and access to supervision. The provider was aware of this, and had taken steps to ensure training was a priority, this was confirmed through discussions with staff who told us they had been allocated numerous training sessions. The provider was responsive in addressing areas of concern raised. People, relatives and staff felt able to raise concerns if they needed to, however, some people and staff did not always feel listened to. People’s consent was requested before care was provided, where people lacked capacity the requirements of the Mental Capacity Act were followed and were required additional support had been provided. People were supported by staff who knew them well. We observed positive interactions between staff and people who lived in the home. Systems checks of the quality of the service were used and a detailed action plan was created to drive improvements.
