Our current view of the service

Requires improvement

Updated 10 December 2024

Salt Hill Care Centre is a care home providing nursing and residential care to up to 53 adults who may be living with dementia or mental health conditions. The service also provides care to autistic people and people with a learning disability. At the time of the assessment, there were 28 people living at the service. There are 4 units, Windsor providing residential care, Hampton and Sandringham providing nursing care and Buckingham which is specialised for dementia care..At the time of the inspection, Buckingham unit was closed for refurbishment. Date of assessment 16 January to 28 January 2025.. The visit was unannounced. Our decision to inspect the service was due to concerns we had received related to the quality of care and support provided. We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. Risks in relation to people’s care and support were assessed and we observed improvements to safe and person-centred care being delivered. Improvements were also observed in regard to ensure people’s mental capacity to consent had been assessed. However, we continued to find identify concerns relating the staffing, environment, infection control and medicines management. We identified concerns with oversight and the service had not improved their governance systems. We found 1 breach of regulation as the systems and processes were not always effective in assessing, monitoring and improving the quality of the service. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of the service

Some people told us there were not always enough staff to support them when they needed help. During our visits to the service, we observed the staff to be caring, and interacting with people in a person-centred way. People were supported by staff who knew them well and understood how to meet their needs appropriately. People were supported to access healthcare services to maintain their wellbeing. They were supported to eat and drink enough with adequate nutrition and hydration. People said that staff cared for them safely. People were happy with the management of the service and knew who to contact if they had any problems they wanted to raise. People said that staff promoted their independence and involved them or their families in decisions about their care.
