Our current view of the service

Requires improvement

Updated 16 December 2024

Date of Assessment: 7 January to 24 January 2025. The service is a residential care home providing care and accommodation to older people including those living with dementia. We found breaches of 2 legal regulations concerning governance and safe care and treatment. Governance and oversight systems had not identified concerns we found or ensured that necessary action was taken when internal audits had identified areas for improvement. People’s health and safety risks were not always assessed and actions identified within care plans. Medicines and environment health and safety risks were not always managed safely. However, staff were suitably trained and positive about working at Mayflower Court. Care was based on latest evidence and good practice. People had enough to eat and drink to stay healthy. Staff worked with all agencies involved in people’s care for the best outcomes and smooth transitions when moving services. Staff supported people to make choices and decisions. Staff and people felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally, free from bullying or harassment. Staff understood their roles and responsibilities. Managers worked with the local community and supported people to access health appointments. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to some of the concerns found at this assessment. In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and or appeals have been concluded.

People's experience of the service

Updated 16 December 2024

People and their family members were generally positive about the quality of their care. They felt safe and were involved in planning their care and understood their rights. People said staff were kind, caring and compassionate and they were treated as individuals. One family member said, “My relative is here on respite but we are in the process of making the arrangement permanent. It’s a nice safe place here and they’ve settled.” People described how staff treated them kindly and made sure any personal care was provided sensitively, preserving their privacy and dignity. Some people could not directly tell us about their experience. We used a structured observation tool to assess whether they received good care. This approach showed people were included and listened to and most staff interacted positively with them. People felt able to complain and were confident action would be taken and improvements would be made.
