Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 22 January to 27 January 2025. The service is a residential care home providing support for up to 55 older people, including those living with dementia. At the time of the assessmnet there was 51 people living at The Hazelwell. The provider had a good learning culture and people could raise concerns. All accidents, incidents and complaints had been recorded and were thoroughly investigated. People’s choices and wishes were respected, and lawful processes were followed for people who lacked capacity to make their own decisions. People’s health was promoted by safe infection prevention and control practices. People were protected and kept safe. Staff understood and managed risks. The environment and equipment met people’s needs, were clean and well-maintained and any risks mitigated. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. Managers made sure staff received training and regular appraisals to maintain high-quality care. Staff managed medicines well and involved people in planning any changes.

People's experience of this service

People and their loved ones were positive about the quality of their care. They felt safe and were fully involved in planning their care and understood their rights. People said they received high quality care from knowledgeable staff who treated them as individuals. One person said, “The team feel like family and know everyone here. They go that extra mile.” People and their loved ones described how staff treated them with respect and ensured personal care was done sensitively, preserving their privacy and dignity. People and their loved ones felt able to complain and where confident action would be taken, and improvements would be made.
