Alvina Lodge is a ‘care home’ without nursing for up to 5 adults with mental health needs. People in care homes receive accommodation and personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement. CQC regulates both the premises, and the care provided. Both were looked at during this assessment.

Date of assessment: 11 March 2025

This assessment was conducted based on our last rating of the service which was requires improvement (published 4 May 2023). During our previous visit, we found improvements needed to be made to staff support and the environment. At this assessment, we found the provider had made the necessary improvements and the service is now rated good.

Whilst the building was safely maintained, we found fire safety arrangements had not always been updated or reviewed following changes in people’s needs. There had also been some safety issues identified through fire drill evacuations which had not been addressed at the time of the assessment. We discussed these with the registered manager, and they agreed to make sure the systems and processes were reviewed to ensure safety of people and compliance with best practice. We were assured by the actions they agreed to take.

People received safe care and treatment which met their needs and reflected their preferences. The staff worked closely with other professionals to monitor and meet these needs. People were able to make decisions about their care. Staff were well supported and appropriately trained. The provider had effective systems of governance to help them monitor and improve quality.

People's experience of the service

People using the service felt safe and were happy living there. They had good relationships with staff. They understood their care plans and knew where there were restrictions, these were for their own safety and well-being. People were supported to be independent when this was possible and appropriate. They were able to tell us about this and how staff supported them in different ways. Feedback from external professionals confirmed people received good quality care and support.
