Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 23 October 2024 to 6 January 2025. Ackroyd House is a care home providing both nursing and personal care for adults of all ages and including people living with dementia. This assessment was undertaken as we had not rated the service since 25 October 2019. We also received concerns pressure care, nutrition and hydration and social isolation at the service. We found no evidence to support these concerns. People were kept safe and staff understood and managed risks. People were involved in their individual assessments of care, which took account of their preferences and communication styles. Where people did not have capacity staff involved in people’s care, and those important to people took decisions in people’s best interests. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. Staff were safely recruited. Managers made sure staff received training and regular support to maintain high-quality care. Staff supported people with their medicines safely. The facilities and equipment were clean and well-maintained, and met people’s needs. The provider had effective quality monitoring systems to identify and drive improvements. Managers investigated accidents, incidents and concerns thoroughly and took appropriate action to maintain people’s safety. People knew how to give feedback and were confident the service listened. The service had a learning culture and people were confident to raise concerns. Staff and managers understood their roles and responsibilities. Members of the management team were visible, knowledgeable and supportive, helping staff develop in their roles. People were supported by staff who felt valued by the management team. Staff were confident to give feedback and were treated equally, free from bullying or harassment. People with protected characteristics were well supported. Managers worked with the local community to deliver the best care and were receptive to new ideas.
People's experience of this service
People spoke positively about the quality of the care they received at Ackroyd House. They told us they felt safe and were involved in planning their care. People said staff were knowledgeable and treated them as individuals. Everyone said staff treated them kindly and preserved their privacy and dignity. One relative said, “The staff are all well trained. They are calm with [my loved one]. The home is more like a family. We have a good rapport with the home. They’re very patient with everybody.” During our visit, we spent time talking with people and observing the care people received to help us assess whether they received good care. This showed people were included and listened to and staff consistently interacted positively with them. We also spoke with some people and relatives by telephone to get further feedback. People and those close to them knew staff and managers well. One relative told us, “I know the manager. I met him before [my loved one] moved in. He showed us around the home. The nursing staff are always present whenever I visit. I’m happy with the manager’s knowledge of [my loved one’s] care. He’s amenable. I can just go and ask him anything.” Everyone said they felt able to raise any concerns and were confident action would be taken and improvements would be made.
