Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people felt well-supported, cared for and treated with dignity and respect.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

People spoke positively about the support they received, describing staff as caring and kind. One person told us, “I'm very happy, the staff are all lovely.” Another person we spoke with said, “The staff are very friendly. Senior staff have a lot to do, they work really hard. The staff give love and cuddles when needed.” Relatives confirmed that people were treated with kindness and compassion. One relative said, “I cannot give the staff enough praise, they are all amazing.” Throughout our visit was saw numerous kind and caring interactions taking place, from staffing having meaningful conversations with people through to comforting them when they appeared distressed.

Treating people as individuals

People were valued and treated as individuals. Staff clearly knew people well, and used this knowledge to provide personalised and effective care. A relative told us, “They know [named person’s] likes and dislikes. I am confident that they are able to give the help needed.” Throughout the day we saw all staff engaging with people, playing games, singing and dancing. There was a good level of engagement and a relaxed rapport between people and the staff supporting them.

Independence, choice and control

We saw that people were given choices over their day to day living, and that their preferences were recorded in care plans. Staff protected and promoted people’s independence by encouraging them to do as much as possible for themselves.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Staff were quick to anticipate and respond to people’s needs. This was made easier as staff knew people well. During our visit we saw staff regularly checking on people’s wellbeing and asking if there was anything they needed or would like. One person told us, “It’s like living in a hotel.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Staff told us they felt supported by the registered manager and provider. One member of staff said, “[Registered manager] really does have a passion for care. You can tell her number one priority is her residents and her staff’s health and well- being.”
