Our view of the service
Coastal Lodge is registered to provide care and support for up to 40 people. The service provides short term residential care, support and rehabilitation for adults, usually following discharge from hospital. At the time of this inspection, there were 34 people using the service. This was a planned inspection to check the quality and safety of the care provided. The inspection took place between 25 March and 26 March 2025. People had risk assessments in place for all their care and support needs. Safeguarding procedures were in place and staff knew how to raise concerns; they were confident they would be taken seriously. People received their medicines as prescribed, however documentation was not always accurately completed. The registered manager took immediate action to prevent a recurrence, and we were fully assured by the action taken. People can only be deprived of their liberty to receive care and treatment when this is in their best interests and legally authorised under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). In care homes, and some hospitals, this is usually through MCA application procedures called the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). We checked whether the service was working within the principles of the MCA. The registered manager understood the requirements of the service in regard to people’s rights. Lessons were learnt and shared from events within the service. Recruitment processes were robust and there were enough staff to meet the needs of people. There was a comprehensive induction and training programme for staff, including supervisions and ongoing competency assessments. Infection prevention and control procedures were in place which meant the service was clean and hygienic. Staff felt passionate about the support they provided for people and were proud to work for the service. Governance systems were operating effectively, and this included oversight by the provider. We received positive feedback about the service, the registered manager.
