Our view of the service

We carried out this announced on-site assessment on 26 November 2024. We found the practice had not met all regulations. The practice did not have effective systems in place to manage risks. There was a lack of oversight and governance structure within the practice. Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation. Patients were treated with dignity and respect. However there was no access to an NHS dentist. Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance and infection control procedures were in place. Gosport Smile Clinic is part of South Cliff Dental Group a dental group provider. The practice is in Gosport Hampshire and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children. There was step free access to the practice and car parking spaces were available near the practice. The practice had 3 treatment rooms. During the assessment we spoke with 2 dental nurses, 2 dental therapists, 1 receptionist and the practice manager. The provider was not complying with Regulations 12 and 17 Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014. Full details of the regulations the provider was not meeting are within the body of the report. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of this service

Two weeks before our onsite assessment, we asked the practice to encourage patients to share their views of the service with us. We did not receive any feedback from patients. On the day of our assessment, we received feedback from 3 patients. Patient feedback provided a positive view of the dental team and care provided by the practice. Comments included, “Staff were very helpful and treated me with nothing but respect and kindness” and “I was fully informed about what treatments were available”. Some patients expressed dissatisfaction that they were unable to access dentist-lead NHS treatment at the practice. While the people we spoke to expressed that they were generally happy with their care, our assessment found there were regulations that were not met.
