Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

People provided positive feedback about staff and how they were cared for. Overall people felt there were enough staff to ensure care was not rushed. People and relatives told us they felt staff treated people with kindness. Comments included, “There’s nothing I’d like to change about living here. They are all wonderful. I am always treated with great dignity and kindness.”; “It’s very nice here. Staff are good and kind. There is a bit of changing around, but some I get to know very well.” and “They are always kind without exception.”

Staff we spoke with recognised people's rights. They understood how to protect people's dignity when they cared for them.

We received positive feedback from professional visitors that staff supported people with a kind and caring manner. Comments included positive feedback on how staff respected people’s privacy and dignity and communicated with people in meaningful ways.

Overall, we observed staff demonstrated kindness and compassion to people, however we shared feedback on-site where a carer referred to a person as a room number and another staff member referred to people as how many more rooms. We raised this with the provider who told us they felt the incident observed may have been due to staff having been taught not to refer to people by name in communal areas to protect their privacy. We reviewed staff meeting records where staff were reminded to ensure they approach people in a compassionate and dignified manner. We also reviewed relative meeting minutes which demonstrated leaders of the service supported relatives to openly discuss topics such as end of life care planning for their loved ones in a sensitive and compassionate way.
