Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. One person told us, “The carers do encourage me to do all the things I can without being reliant on them. I need to keep my independence, it’s important to me." People confirmed they were encouraged and supported to be involved in the care planning process and encouraged to make choices about their care, ensuring their independence was maintained. A relative informed us, “The communication is very very good. We are listened to. We are very much involved, and we all work as a team. I love how [family members] choices and decisions are at the fore front of the decision making.”

Staff told us they understood the importance of supporting people to maintain or regain their independence. A member of staff said, “We're committed to helping people stay as independent as possible. We do this by creating personalised care plans and encouraging clients to participate in daily activities as much as they can. We always encourage them to make choices and decisions about their own care.”

People’s communication needs were assessed before a care package commenced to ensure they were fully supported to understand their rights and able to make decisions about their care. Care plans contained up to date information about people’s needs including their choices and preferences. They contained information for staff guidance to promote people’s independence in areas such as mobility and managing their medicines.
