Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they had a choice in who supported them, and this included their preference of staff gender. People spent time undertaking the activities of their choice, and staff supported them with this where required. One person told us they were supported with educational activities, another person told us staff helped them with goals, which were important to them. All people told us staff assisted them in a way which increased their confidence. For example, 1 person told us staff encouraged them to take a photo of their specific drink of choice, so when they are in the community, they could independently order what they wanted. People told us staff respected their home environment, and they were able to have time alone when they wished. Furthermore, people told us staff supported them to have contact with those who are important to them, either in person, or using communication devices.

Staff supported people to be independent, and to have choice and control over their lives. Staff knew people well, and supported people to make, and work towards, achievable goals. Staff celebrated people’s successes, and we saw evidence of how this empowered people to further explore their long-term aims, which included participation in activities, and working towards increased independent living. One staff member told us, “We encourage [person] to wash, dress and clean [their] teeth. We do try to give options so [person] can make [their] own choices, for example with food. [Staff] might encourage healthy eating, but [person] makes [their] own decisions.”

People’s choices and preferences were detailed within their care plans, and we found communication was effective between staff, and people. People had access to independent advocates, and interpreters, to ensure their needs and wishes were recognised, understood and acted upon. The providers processes supported people’s independence, choice and control.
