Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 11 December 2024. South Hylton Surgery is a GP practice and delivers care to 4,559 people under standard general medical services (GMS) contract. The National General Practice Profiles states that the population served by South Hylton Surgery is more deprived that the national average. This assessment considered the demographics of the people using the service, the context the service was working within and how this impacted service delivery. Where relevant, further commentary is provided in the quality statements section of this report. This was a responsive assessment, conducted in response to data gathered within the NHS England GP Patient Survey 2024. This service was outstanding at being responsive to the needs of the community. People were involved in decisions about their care. The service provided information people could understand. People knew how to give feedback and were confident the service took it seriously and acted upon it. The service had improved their access since our last assessment and worked continuously to evaluate the changes that had been made. People received fair and equal care and treatment. The service worked to reduce health and care inequalities through training and innovation. This service was outstanding in their governance, leadership, and innovation. Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable and supportive and helped staff develop in their roles. Staff felt supported to give feedback and felt that their feedback was acted upon by leadership. Managers worked with the local community to deliver the best possible care and were receptive to new ideas. There was a culture of continuous improvement with staff given time and resources to try new ideas. Leaders held close relationships with the community.
People's experience of this service
People had mixed feedback about the quality of their care and treatment. Recent survey results from the NHS England GP Patient Survey 2024 showed people were not satisfied with services. Of those who were surveyed and responded, 43.8% of patients would describe their overall experience of South Hylton Surgery as good. Other results in this survey indicated that people had more difficulty contacting the practice than the national average and did not feel as listened to by the healthcare professional at their last appointment as the national average. However, data collected by South Hylton Surgery via various questionnaires showed that people were satisfied with services. According to the practice’s survey, 70% of patients who responded would describe their overall experience of South Hylton Surgery as good. Data collected from people by CQC via the Give Feedback on Care questionnaire was positive, with people describing the care provided by South Hylton Surgery as outstanding, understanding, friendly, and helpful. There was an active patient participation group (PPG) who represented the views of people using the service. Representatives from the PPG described how practice leadership had made positive changes because of their direct feedback. Leaders from aligned care homes provided positive feedback on the standard of care delivered by South Hylton Surgery to their residents.
