Our view of the service
We carried out this announced on-site assessment on 21 January 2025.
We found the practice had met regulations.
Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and there was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
Patients were treated with dignity and respect and at the time of our assessment, could access care, support and treatment when required.
Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance and infection control procedures were in place.
The practice had systems to manage risks.
Circus Orthodontics is part of PortmanDentex a dental group provider. The practice is in Bath, Somerset and provides NHS orthodontic care and treatment for children.
The practice is located within a multi-storey building, on the ground and lower ground floors. The practice had five dental chairs. Surgery one has two chairs and surgery two has one chair, located on the ground floor. Surgery three has two chairs, located on the lower ground floor.
Due to the structural restrictions of the building the practice was not wheelchair accessible from outside.
At the time of our assessment, the dental team consisted of 3 orthodontists, 2 orthodontic therapists, 4 dental nurses, 2 receptionists and 1 practice manager. During the assessment we spoke with 3 orthodontists, 3 dental nurses, 1 receptionist, and the practice manager.
People's experience of this service
Two weeks before our on-site assessment, we asked the practice to encourage patients to share their views of the service with us. We did not receive any direct feedback in advance. The practice had sought patient feedback prior to the assessment, the results of which they shared on the day. In excess of 50 responses were received and overall comments were positive.
Patient feedback provided a positive view of the dental team and care provided by the practice.
Patients commented positively about the standards of cleanliness.
Patients felt able to book appointments within an acceptable timescale for their needs and said they had enough time during their appointment without feeling rushed.
Patients told us they were given clear information to help them make an informed choice about their treatment and any associated costs. They were involved in decisions about their care.
Patients told us that when they were prescribed medicines, sufficient information was given.
Some patients told us they felt there were not always enough staff working at the practice.
The practice shared patient feedback with the team. We were told this was reviewed and where suggestions had been made, appropriate action would be taken.
