Our view of the service
Date of assessment 17 September to 29 October 2024. During this assessment we assessed 3 quality statements in the key questions of safe, effective and caring to check the provider had followed their action plan to make improvements. We found the service had made improvements and the provider was no longer in breach of regulations. Staff were now responsive to people’s needs and 1:1 support was being provided in line with people’s care plans and risk assessments. Leaders told us they had been working with staff to be clearer in their communication to ensure people were being communicated in a respectful way. Supervisions and team meetings evidenced discussions with staff about communicating with people respectfully. Staff had received training relating to dignity and respect. There was also evidence staff had completed additional training in least restrictive practices.
People's experience of this service
We expect health and social care providers to guarantee autistic people and people with a learning disability the choices, dignity, independence and good access to local communities. Right support, right care, right culture is the statutory guidance which supports CQC to make assessments and judgements about services. Right Support: People were supported to have choice and control of their lives. People and relatives had been involved in care planning. Comments include "I have been involved in the past, haven't done one for a few years". Records show people have access to activities and events inside and outside the home. Relatives told us family members were supported to work towards goals and the home helps people to maintain their social circle, pursue hobbies and interests. Right Care: Some staff still spoke about people when they were in the room, and we could not be assured people were not affected by this. Relatives told us they felt people were treated with respect and staff listened to people’s choices and preferences. They told us that people have access to healthcare and social support when required. Right Culture: People told us they felt their relatives were safe at Orchid House and felt confident that any concerns raised with management would be dealt with appropriately. They told us that they were happy with the way risk was managed in the home; involved in making decisions on how to manage risk and updated when new risks were identified. Relatives told us communication from the home was good and they were kept informed of changes to people’s health and wellbeing.
