Person-centred Care
People received care and support that was specific to their needs, being treated as individuals at all times. Feedback from people living at the service reflected this, with one person saying, “I can choose when I have breakfast and get washed.” A relative told us, ‘They do ensure my relative has choices. I know she has meal choices as well.” We saw staff responded to people as individuals and promoted their rights as individuals in line with what was written in their care plans, reflecting likes, dislikes and respecting preferred routines. People were able to join in with a variety of activities either one to one or in small groups. Everyone was offered a variety of things to do each day but their privacy was also respected. Staff knew people well and this was reflected in the interactions we saw between people and staff.

Planning for the future
Most care plans had a section that described people’s advanced decision’s relating to their care. Some people could not recall these conversations however records were reviewed regularly and if needed, updated. All staff had completed end of life training with nursing staff having completed advanced courses. Staff were able to tell us about the important aspects of supporting people at this time of their lives. Do Not Attempt Resuscitation DNAR forms were in most care plans where people had had an opportunity to discuss this option of later care.
