Effective – this means we looked for evidence that people’s care, treatment and support achieved good outcomes and promoted a good quality of life, based on best available evidence.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good.

People had access to food and drink of their choice and were supported to eat a healthy diet. People were supported to access healthcare services to maintain good health.

Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

People’s care and support was delivered in line with best practice guidelines. People were supported to have food and drinks that were healthy and met their nutritional and dietary requirements. People told us they enjoyed the food provided at the service. One person told us, “Food is lovely.”

People’s care records stated their nutritional needs, dietary requirements, likes, dislikes and allergies. We saw the SALT guidelines for staff to follow to support people safely with their eating and drinking. The menu had a range of options which included vegetables and fruits. We observed staff supporting one person to eat in line with the guidelines in place for them. Staff told us if they had concerns about people's nutritional needs, they raised it with the GP.

Training record showed staff had completed training courses to enable them support people appropriately with their nutritional needs.

Supporting people to live healthier lives

Score: 3

People were supported to maintain their health and well-being. People and their relatives told us staff supported them to access healthcare services they needed to maintain good health. One relative mentioned, “[Loved one] was supported by the community physiotherapy service.” Another relative told us, “The staff know when [loved one] is feeling unwell and they arrange an appointment for them.”

Staff told us they contacted the GP if people were unwell. Staff knew the healthcare services involved in meeting people physical and mental health needs.

Each person had a health action plan which identified their health needs and how they would be met. We saw records of health checks and reviews people had, and they showed people had regular contact with health professionals. The professionals we spoke with said staff kept them up to date with information, communicated effectively and implemented actions as agreed. For example, where a person’s medicine needed to be changed or when a follow up appointment was needed, staff acted on this promptly.
