Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

Women, birthing people and their partners told us staff treated them with kindness, they felt respected and their privacy and dignity was maintained. They were confident staff would listen to their wishes and they were updated regularly and involved in changes to their care. Women felt staff listened to them and communicated with them appropriately, in a way they could understand.

During our assessment, staff were discreet and responsive when caring for women and their babies. Staff took time to interact with women and those close to them in a respectful, compassionate and considerate way. We saw several positive, caring interventions by staff, who took time to ensure women’s needs were understood and met. From our observations, all staff were pleasant, kind and polite to women, their families, and visitors.

The views of people who used services and partners were listened to and taken into account. Staff working for partner organisations, such as the local maternity and neonatal voices partnership (MNVP), told us they worked closely with the service to help make sure women’s and birthing people’s views were represented and maternity services were designed to meet local needs. They worked together to determine how accessible information was and what was needed to improve care and choice for all women and birthing people. MNVP held quarterly meetings with the service to escalate feedback from women and birthing people to maternity leads.

Staff were kind and respectful to women and birthing people, they gave women time to make decisions and supported them with care if this was needed. Staff were kind and respectful to each other face to face, but during their conversations with us, some showed intolerance towards some other groups of staff.
