Our view of the service

Date of assessment 22 January 2025.Thornlea is a ‘care home’ providing personal care and support to people over 18. At the time of the assessment, the service was supporting 15 people with their personal care needs. Thornlea was last rated ‘Good’ (published 15 April 2018). The report was published following CQC’s old inspection approach using key lines of enquiry (KLOEs), prompts and ratings characteristics. This assessment has been completed following the Care Quality Commission (CQC) new approach to assessment; Single Assessment Framework (SAF). We undertook this assessment following concerns relating to the effective management of the home.

Risk assessments were completed to promote independence, wellbeing and support people to make their own choices. Where people did not have capacity, all necessary actions had been carried out under the Mental Capacity Act including making appropriate applications under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) if required. Safeguarding training for staff had been completed and we saw regular updates for staff had been arranged. Staff were confident the management team would investigate any issues appropriately. Staff supported people who had capacity to make decisions about risk. Care plans were in place and ones we looked at had been regularly reviewed to reflect any changes that had been identified. They were clear, comprehensive and provided guidance to staff to keep people safe. The management team ensured there were sufficient, safely recruited staff on duty. Incidents or accidents were reviewed and investigated. They also monitored these records to identify any developing trends that might indicate any future changes were required. The action taken by the management team had improved people’s safety and enabled staff to deliver safe care and support.

The staff and manager are so nice and all very caring. The residents are so well looked after.” One person said, “I couldn’t have chosen a better place to live everybody is so nice nothing is too much trouble for them.” Communication with the management team and staff was good.
