Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People told us they had choices and were able to choose how they wanted to spend their time. Comments included, “I have as much choice as I can have. I prefer to be up a little later, so the staff always respect this” and “She does have choice, choices about what she wants to eat. She goes to bed when she wants. She loves to attend the monthly [name of group] meeting, as she was very active in her time.” People were supported to maintain relationships that were important to them. Comments included, “My daughter visited earlier today. I have recently attended my relative’s birthday party, it was excellent” and “I can maintain relationships. Former neighbours and church friends are always popping in.” People had access to activities and their local community. Comments included, “I am able to go out, can't shop anymore sadly but do enjoy trips out.” Care plans detailed people's likes, dislikes and preferences for how they wished to receive their care. For example, in some people’s care plans it documented they liked to have a bath on a Monday evening. One relative told us, “Mum gets help to have a bath once or twice a week, she is encouraged to do this, staff are very caring and supportive of her. There is always the time and the trouble taken to speak with her and encourage her all they can.”
