Independence, choice and control

People told us that staff supported them to be as independent as possible. This included supporting them with equipment that promoted their independence and comfort as far as possible. One person told us, “I love it here because I can do things for myself and go to shows – I’m going out on Friday.” Another person said, “The carer helps me only when I need it, like washing my back.”

Staff talked a lot about how important it was to support people to be as independent as possible and gave many examples of how they did this. One staff said, “[People] decide their own meals and do their own shopping with our support. Meals are always flexible and can change anytime they want.” Another staff said, “Our aim is to support the [people] to be as self-managing as possible.”

People were smiling and shook the inspector’s hand when they arrived. People knew the inspectors were coming and said that staff had asked them if it was ok for them to visit them today. People were happy in each other’s company and clearly enjoyed sharing banter with each other as well as with the staff; they shared private jokes and asked each other if they could listen/watch programs and shows or make a person’s favourite drink. People were excited to tell us what they did to keep their bedrooms and en-suites clean and tidy.

People had access to all areas of the service and were supported to make their own meals and keep their rooms clean. People also maintained the communal areas of the service. For example, there was a decking area at the back of the house which had places to sit, flowers and shrubs, and a greenhouse growing vegetables that people were watering.
