Date of Assessment: 5 March 2025 to 7 March 2025. Calway House is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care to up to 92 people. The home provides care and accommodation to older and younger adults including people living with dementia. The building is divided into five suites. Maple and Spruce cared for people who required support with personal care, Laurel and Cedar provided nursing care to people and Sycamore supported people who were living with dementia. At the time of the assessment, 80 people were living at the home This assessment was prompted in part by notification of a specific incident. Following which a person using the service died. This incident is subject to inquisitorial, coronal investigation. As a result, this inspection did not examine the circumstances of the incident. However, the information shared with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) about the incident indicated potential concerns about the management of the risk of choking. This assessment examined those risks. Individual risk assessments for people were in place to protect them when receiving care and support. Risk assessments regarding pressure damage, choking and malnutrition were completed and reflected in people’s care plans. Risk assessments were reviewed monthly as part of the provider’s, ‘resident of the day’ process, or more regularly if a person’s needs changed. Systems were in place to discuss any changes to people’s risk of harm. Where necessary, referrals to external healthcare professionals were made in a timely manner. Staff had clear guidance and were knowledgeable about who required additional support with their diet. They were able to tell us the consistencies of diet and fluids they required. The provider used a dependency tool to assess people’s needs and ensured there were enough staff on duty. 99.97% of the staff at Calway House had completed the provider’s mandatory training. The provider used incidents of concern to learn across their services.
