Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 5 March 2025 to 7 March 2025. Calway House is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care to up to 92 people. The home provides care and accommodation to older and younger adults including people living with dementia. The building is divided into five suites. Maple and Spruce cared for people who required support with personal care, Laurel and Cedar provided nursing care to people and Sycamore supported people who were living with dementia. At the time of the assessment, 80 people were living at the home This assessment was prompted in part by notification of a specific incident. Following which a person using the service died. This incident is subject to inquisitorial, coronal investigation. As a result, this inspection did not examine the circumstances of the incident. However, the information shared with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) about the incident indicated potential concerns about the management of the risk of choking. This assessment examined those risks. Individual risk assessments for people were in place to protect them when receiving care and support. Risk assessments regarding pressure damage, choking and malnutrition were completed and reflected in people’s care plans. Risk assessments were reviewed monthly as part of the provider’s, ‘resident of the day’ process, or more regularly if a person’s needs changed. Systems were in place to discuss any changes to people’s risk of harm. Where necessary, referrals to external healthcare professionals were made in a timely manner. Staff had clear guidance and were knowledgeable about who required additional support with their diet. They were able to tell us the consistencies of diet and fluids they required. The provider used a dependency tool to assess people’s needs and ensured there were enough staff on duty. 99.97% of the staff at Calway House had completed the provider’s mandatory training. The provider used incidents of concern to learn across their services.

People's experience of this service

We observed people receiving support on the Sycamore unit. This unit supports people living with dementia. People could not directly tell us about their experience. We used observation to assess their experiences of care. This approach showed people were included and listened to and staff consistently interacted positively with them. For example, at the lunchtime experience, staff showed people plates of food with the different meals on offer. People could choose the meal option they wanted and were then offered vegetables, gravy and condiments. Staff supported people to cut up their meals in a dignified manner to ensure their food was as required for them. Where one person did not want their lunch, staff respected this decision and arranged for the meal to be kept back for a later time. People’s comments, when asked about their lunch, included, “Yes, it is very nice” and “It is lovely.”

We observed a positive mealtime experience for people. People were relaxed with the staff supporting them and the atmosphere was relaxed. Staff knew them well and were kind and respectful.
