This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Assessing needs

Score: 3

The service made sure people’s care and treatment was effective by assessing and reviewing their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them. One relative told us, “[Name of person] is not as young now, so they are constantly reassessing their abilities.” Where people’s needs changed, appropriate referrals to professionals were completed.

The service’s initial assessment involved meeting with the person and relatives and discussing the support required. This included personal care needs, communication, daily living skills, social skills and relationships, expressing sexuality, interests and hobbies, education and employment, religious, spiritual and cultural needs. A compatibility assessment was also completed before a person first moved to the service.

The service supported people with their rights around consent and respected these when delivering person-centred care and treatment. One relative told us, “[Name of person] is always treated with dignity and kindness. They always ask for consent before they do anything. They are treated with respect, what more could I ask for.”

Staff knew the importance of seeking consent. One staff member told us, “It just happens naturally, a lot of people are happy to speak their mind, and we always respect their choices, we empower them to be able to say no. They [people] are the ones in control.” Throughout our visits we observed people being asked their consent before support was provided. Staff told us they knew people well and understood their communication needs. Mental capacity assessments and best interest decisions were in place.
