Our view of the service

This assessment has been undertaken of a specialist service that is used by autistic people or people with a learning disability. We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. Beau House is a care home registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to accommodate a maximum of 5 people. This was the first assessment since new registration. We carried out our on-site assessment activity on 20 August, 21 August and 30 August 2024. Off site assessment activity concluded on 13 September 2024. Medicines were not always managed in a way that supported best practice. However, we found no evidence people had been harmed, and the provider took immediate action after our feedback. In other areas of support, we found people were supported to have the maximum possible choice, control and be independent and they had control over their own lives, and people were supported by staff to pursue their interests. Staff enabled people to access health and social care support in the community. Staff promoted equality and diversity in their support for people. They understood people’s cultural needs and provided culturally appropriate care. Staff understood how to protect people from poor care and abuse and worked with other agencies to do so. Systems for audit, quality assurance and questioning of practice were not always operated effectively by the provider. However, we recognised that shortly before our assessment, the provider had made several key appointments into leadership positions, and a whole-service review of governance had already started.

People's experience of this service

People who used the service spoke highly of the registered manager and staff involved in their care. Comments included “[Registered manager] is really nice and always friendly to me” and “I like my support workers, especially when we go out and do stuff like going to the cinema or shops.” We received mixed feedback from relatives, comments included “The manager is good. They want what is best for [Person]. The staff are nice and accommodating. In the beginning they involved me with everything but don't always contact me now when anything happens. Its finding a balance” and “The running of it [care home] is good and works well however the staff don't seem to be able to encourage [Person] with their routines.”
