Our view of the service

Date of assessment 9 January to 15 January 2025. Alexander Court is a nursing home providing accommodation and personal care to older people. The service can support up to 60 people. At the time of this assessment, there were 39 people living at Alexander Court. People’s individual risks were identified, and risk assessment reviews were carried out to keep people safe. There had been significant improvements to ensure risks identified with people's health, medical and care needs had been assessed and documented. There was clear guidance on how to minimise the risk to keep people safe. People received their medicines safely and as prescribed. Systems and processes were in place to keep people safe. The service was working within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) and if needed appropriate legal authorisations were requested when depriving a person of their liberty in their best interests. The provider undertook regular health and safety checks of the premises to ensure people lived freely within a safe environment. Effective infection control measures were in place. There were enough staff deployed to meet peoples’ needs. There were safe and effective recruitment processes in place. Staff were well trained and competent in their roles. Care was personalised and staff worked to deliver person-centred care which maintained people’s dignity with understanding. Staff felt respected, supported, and valued by the registered manager which created a positive and improvement-driven culture. There were clear and effective governance, management and accountability arrangements in place and staff understood their role and responsibilities.

People's experience of this service

The service was very caring and had an emphasis on caring for people as individuals. People said staff were kind, compassionate, caring and visible around the home, which we saw during our site visit. One person said, “I do feel safe, I came for respite and ended up staying, I wanted to stay.” Another person said, “They proper look after you here, the staff are proper good, they help me with sara steady and toilet. If I press the buzzer they come straight away and help me. Staff are so kind; they go above and beyond to help me.” People felt valued by staff who showed genuine interest in their wellbeing and quality of life. Care was personalised and staff worked to deliver person-centred care which maintained people’s dignity with understanding. People’s care, treatment and support promoted equality, removed barriers or delays, and protected their rights. People’s individual risks were identified, and risk assessment reviews were carried out to keep people safe. People who received support with medicines told us it was administered appropriately and in a timely manner. People were supported to have choice and control over their own care and to make decisions about their care, treatment, and wellbeing. People told us staff helped them feel safe without minimising their independence. They felt able to move freely around the home and spend the day as they wished. People were supported to have a peaceful, comfortable, and dignified end of life care in line with national best practice guidance. People were supported to see appropriate health and social care professionals to meet their healthcare needs.
