Assessing needs
The judgement for Assessing needs is based on the latest evidence we assessed for the Effective key question.
Delivering evidence-based care and treatment
The dentist confirmed, where applicable, they referred patients to a range of specialists in primary and secondary care for treatment the practice did not provide.
Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.
The practice offered dental implants. Staff had access to the appropriate equipment for the placement of implants. From the records we viewed on the day, we were not assured there was sufficient detail documented regarding treatment options and discussions with patients.
The practice had access to a Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) machine, a dental tool to create custom ceramic dental restorations. Improvements could be made to ensure the practice was registered with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for the production of medical devices. The practice submitted evidence following the assessment to show they had started the process of registering with MHRA.
We looked at 6 patient care records. The information recorded in these patient care records was not always in line with recognised guidance. In particular, ensuring patient specific risk factors are documented and intra-oral and extra-oral soft tissue examinations are conducted and recorded. We signposted them to up-to-date guidance and tools to support them.
We saw evidence the dentists justified, graded and reported on the radiographs they took. Improvements were needed to ensure sufficient justification and reporting was documented for cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. In particular, ensuring the report included all aspects of the scan.
The practice had systems for prescribing in line with current guidance.
The practice had systems for referring patients with suspected cancer under the national Faster Diagnosis Standard.
