During an assessment under our new approach

We carried out this on-site, announced assessment on 30 July 2024. We found the practice had not met all regulations. Infection control procedures followed published guidance. Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance. Patients were treated with dignity and respect. At the time of our assessment, patients could access care, support and treatment when required. However, there was a lack of effective leadership and not all risks associated with undertaking of regulated activities had been suitably identified and mitigated. We noted that recruitment procedures did not reflect current legislation. Olive Dental Practice is in Saxmundham, Suffolk and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children. At the time of our assessment, the dental team included 3 dentists, 5 dental nurses including 3 trainee dental nurses, 2 dental hygienists, all the dental nurses cover the reception in turns. The practice had 3 treatment rooms. During the assessment we spoke with 2 dentists and 3 dental nurses including 2 trainee dental nurses, 2 of the dental nurses were working on the reception. The provider was not complying with all regulations. Full details of the regulation the provider was not meeting are within the quality statement section of the report. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This follow up inspection focused on the work that had been undertaken to address non-compliance following our inspection of 6 August 2013. During our inspection we did not speak to people who used the service.

We found that improvements had been made. People who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening. This is because staff had received training and were aware of what action they should take to protect the safety and welfare of vulnerable children and adults who used the service.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with six people attending appointments. With their permission we accompanied four people during their consultation and treatment. All the people we spoke with were positive about the quality of service they received. One person told us that the service, 'Has always been really good.' Another person told us they were, 'Very happy,' with the service.

We saw that staff treated people in a respectful and courteous manner. Several people commented on the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. One person told us that they always found the staff to be, 'Friendly and helpful.'

People told us that staff fully involved them in any decisions about their dental care and treatment. This was confirmed in our observations. We heard the dentist ask people if there had been any dental problems since they were last seen. Where people said that they had, we saw that staff listened and acted on the information given.

We found that not all of the staff had received training to ensure they knew what action to take when dealing with issues concerning mental capacity and in safeguarding people's welfare.

There were systems in place which enabled people to share their views of the service and influence how the service was run.

We observed that the reception and clinical areas were clean and tidy. People confirmed that they always found it to be of the same standard. One person remarked that they had, 'Never found it grubby.'
