Independence, choice and control
People told us there were social activities that they could attend if they wished to. One person told us, “There are activities laid on for us, but I like to do my own things. I like drawing and making jewellery and cards for people.” They told us they were looking forward to the Christmas Party. They told us and showed us drawing they had created for celebrating Halloween. Another person told us they liked to go to the lounge to watch a visiting musician once a week. A relative told us they visited their loved one every day and no time restriction were placed on them.
The service employed an activities coordinator, the registered manager told us the activities coordinator was currently off work. An agency staff member was facilitating activities to people using the service. A staff member told us they had plenty of time to engage with people using the service. We saw them reading with people and joining in with activities. The home manager and staff told us that visitors were welcome at the home at any time; however they appreciated a call from them before they visited. They said people’s mealtimes were protected so that people could be supported to eat undisturbed, however they advised that some people’s relatives liked to come to help their loved one to eat their meals.
We observed the agency activities coordinator drawing and colouring in with a resident and later playing board games with others. We also saw them and people using the service play ball games and keep fit.
Staff showed us 4 weekly rolling activities plans for people at the home. Activities on offer to people included arts and crafts, bingo, foot spa, live music, board games, baking, sharing memories, ball games, connect 4, yoga and exercise, pampering, dominoes and movie nights. Upcoming dates for people’s diary included a Christmas party.
