Independence, choice and control
The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Supporting people to make choices and maintain their independence was a key focus of the service. We observed many respectful and affectionate interactions between people and staff throughout the inspection. Staff were continually offering people choices, either food and drink or activities for them to enjoy. Care plans detailed what the person could do for themselves and guided staff to promote this. An example was where staff offered visual options for people, supporting them to be involved and make their own choices if they had a sight or memory difficulty. Staff told us they were committed to supporting people with their independence. A staff member said, “Our residents had independent lives before, and they take pride in that.” Another staff member told us, “Providing care is good for their wellbeing, making people feel valued and empowered. We help them stay healthier for longer.” People were supported to make choices within their care plans, this had included input from their relatives and key staff, such as, the chef to support with preferences and nutritional needs.
