Equity in experiences and outcomes

Score: 3

Staff and leaders actively listened to information about people who are most likely to experience inequality in experience or outcomes and tailored their care, support and treatment in response to this.

The registered manager told us they listened to people about how they liked to be supported. They did not currently employ any male care staff as people generally preferred female staff for the provision of personal care. They would not send a male carer to a female service user to provide personal care if this was not their wish. If a person requested care from male staff, they said they would recruit to accommodate their wishes.

People’s diverse needs were respected. The provider had procedures in place regarding equality and diversity and staff had received training to understand this. One staff member told us, “I look at providing people with person centred care. I support people no matter what their cultural background or diverse needs are. For example, I have respected a person’s religious needs by planning a staff rota around the person’s prayer time. We take our shoes off when going into people’s homes.” Another staff told us they recently received equality and diversity training. They said, “I learned how to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures. I believe everyone should be treated equally. We [care staff] are there to care and support people.”
