Our view of the service

Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital provides an Acute and Psychiatric Intensive Care service for male adults. At the time of our assessment the hospital had been operating as an adult service for 2 weeks. The service consisted of two wards; Brook, a 15 bedded acute ward and Blythe, a 12 bedded Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Cygnet were planning to open a further two wards over the coming months. The service was supporting 3 patients in the acute ward and 1 in the PICU at the time of the assessment. Cygnet Joyce Parker previously provided an inpatient Children and Adolescent Mental Health service (CAMHS) until October 2024. The CAMHS service was last rated as requires improvement (published April 2023 under CQC’s old methodology). A focused, unrated inspection of the CAMHS service took place in July 2024 (report published January 2025). This inspection was carried out following CQC’s new approach to assessment; Single Assessment Framework (SAF). We carried out a mix of onsite and offsite assessment activity between 30 October 2024 and 6 November 2024. This was an unannounced assessment, which means the provider was not told an assessment was going to be starting beforehand. As this assessment was carried out in response to specific concerns, we looked at 15 quality statements across the key questions of safe, caring, responsive and well-led. This assessment has not produced a rating for the service.

People's experience of this service

We spoke with 2 patients and 1 carer. One patient said staff were supportive and the other patient said they felt safe. One patient raised concerns that staff were loud at night and kept them awake. The carer we spoke with said most staff treated their relative with kindness and respect. They said their relative raised concerns about their safety, which were then resolved by the provider. They said staff did not keep them informed and they relied on their relative keeping them up to date. They also raised concerns that staff did not listen to their relative’s preferences. The service employed their own expert by experience who told us the 4 patients at the service when we visited, were all complimentary about the service.
